Home Hint 9 Chop Onions Without Crying
I love onions. I love cooking with them or eating them raw in salads or sandwiches. They add great flavour to many a dish. But, what do you do about that annoying little problem of crying all over the onions?
Did you know that the strong smell of the onion is not what makes you cry? When you slice into the onion the cells break open releasing a strong sulfur compound, which wafts up and mixes with your wet eyes causing a burning sensation resulting in lots of tears.

One quick tip to keep onions from making your eyes water is to simply wet the knife blade before chopping. Voila, problem solved. No more tears. I have also read that cutting the onion under running water or refrigerating the onion before slicing helps. But I find simply wetting the knife to be sufficient, quick, and easy.
To rid your hands of the residual onion smell, you can run a slice of lemon over your hands. If you do not have fresh lemon, one drop of
lemon essential oil will also do the trick.
