Your home should be your castle. So, you shouldn’t allow its surrounding to look unworthy of its magnificence. The backyard is supposed to be your asset, instead of being neglected, abandoned and abused. Besides the value that a beautiful backyard can add to a property’s price if you have plans of selling, it will make your staying at home more pleasant and provide the necessary rest for your eyes. Remodelling and maintaining your exterior takes time and money, and you really don’t want to spend all of your savings on doing that. The good news is that you can make great changes without desolating your wallet. You just need a little time and creativity.

Start with the Basics
If you’ve been neglecting your yard for a while now, you probably couldn’t resist the temptation of using it as a storage area. Now is the right time to fix those errors from the past. Your first task should be removing the clutter. Some of those things probably belong on the dump, others you may store in some sort of yard shed. Next step will require getting your hands a little dirty. Grass is the most important part of your yard, so, if necessary, reseed all of it or just the yellow parts. Once you’ve got that solved, move on to plants. There is nothing that can liven up the yard the same way as plants. You can even divide it into sections by using simple materials as stones and bricks to make several small gardens.

Take a Seat
As the backyard is a place of rest, it is normal that you want to have a place to sit and on a beautiful day to organise some lunch or a dinner party. To be able to do that, you’ll need furniture. You don’t need to buy new, it will be enough to repair the ones you already have. Just strip down that old unattractive colour and repaint it in some bold unexpected shade, like green, blue, yellow. Or, if you don’t want it to stand out as much, paint it in some regular colour and decorate it with brightly coloured pillows.

Come Rain or Shine
In your new oasis, beside a place to sit, you’ll need some place to hide from the sun, and sometimes even shelter from the rain. In order to be able to enjoy your patio when a few or more drops of rain fall, you should consider your options for protection. Fortunately, there is a practical, decorative and wallet-friendly solution for that, and it is called: shade sails. You can install them yourself if you have the time and the skill. They are available in almost every store selling yard elements. You can even look for shade sails online, and that way save precious time, which you can use on other backyard remodelling projects.

Lighten Things up
You probably don’t want your staying in the backyard to be restricted by the time of the day. Why couldn’t you spend time in your oasis in the evenings as well? In order to make that possible, you’ll need proper lighting. We’re assuming your wallet isn’t very happy at the mention of getting lighting installations all over the backyard. Well, you needn't worry, as there are different less pricey solutions for that (my personal favorites are jars with candles, cupcake liners placed around a bulb and chandelier made of hula-hoop).

No reason to wait any second longer. Roll up your sleeves and get to work. In just a few days you’ll enjoy the fruits of your labour.
