Interior design trends come and go, so which bandwagon should you be jumping on? It can be difficult to determine whether a particular trend is simply a fad or one that is here to stay. Imagine the frustration of decorating your home in accordance with the year’s hottest trends, only for this supposedly ‘hot trend’ to be later revealed as one of the worst interior fads of all time. Awkward!
Nobody wants to redecorate for the purposes of avoiding social embarrassment, we all want to do it on our own terms. So let’s avoid this potential stressful ordeal and assess the handful of trends that have been classed as superior and proudly hold the title ‘timeless.’

Neutral Base

When it comes to the interior elements that are difficult and costly to modify - flooring, carpet, kitchen cabinets, curtains & blinds, it is wise to keep it neutral. Unless you are not the least bit phased by the time, hassle and expense associated with remodelling these features of your home, I strongly suggest a neutral palette consisting of beiges or creams rather than the vibrant colours trending that year. Cost factor aside, the key disadvantage attached to ‘current trends’ is that once the craze passes, your home becomes a solid representation of what is outdated. I suggest incorporating homewares and decorative items as a means of injecting current trends into your home. These elements are far less permanent and can be updated quite easily.

Blue and White Porcelain

Blue and White Porcelain bears a rich history, dating back to the Tang Dynasty - a period also responsible for the Chinese antiques we admire and very much desire. Today, Blue and White Porcelain is proudly collected and displayed by home owners around the world. Displaying these porcelain gems in clusters adds a touch of elegance to the interior. Do not be afraid to feature a mix of traditional and contemporary decor. In fact, featuring a classic Blue and White Porcelain vase between an even number of contemporary vases can break a monotonous interior by creating a rich contrast between the old and the new. The elaborate patterns associated with Blue and White Porcelain continues to receive praise and attention from designers and house proud individuals because of its ability to complement various interiors and generate a sense of style of grandeur.

Incorporate Texture

Incorporating textured elements can add warmth, style and sophistication to your interior. These are often the elements that make a room cozy. Cushions and throws are a simple and cost effective way of adding instant texture to the room. Rugs also have the potential to release those warm and fuzzy vibes. Textured elements are often the items that complete the room. Without these finishing touches, a space can feel cold and uninviting.

Less is More

It is safe to say that cluttered interiors are never quite as enticing as a clean, semi-minimalist interior. Overflowing shelves and tables are unattractive and undesirable. It is important to choose furnishings that are in proportion to the size of your room. Cluttered interiors do not allow for the appreciation of your furnishings and decor. So rather than trying to squeeze an entire shops worth of furniture into your living room, remember that less is more and casting the spotlight on a few favourites is likely to receive more praise.

Wooden Flooring

For decades now, hard wood floors have been a popular choice for homes. Its ability to achieve a state of popularity that has lasted for several decades is a genuine indication of its timeless appeal. It continues to receive the tick of approval because it complements a wide variety of interior decor. As home owners, you can redecorate to your hearts content, knowing that those beautiful wooden floors will blend perfectly well with whatever may tickle your fancy.
